From a Breaking Point to a Place of Hope

This is Richard’s story.
A few months ago, Richard had completely lost his desire to live. He was struggling with deep depression and constant anxiety, and his emotional pain reached such a critical point that he began to self-harm. His situation was truly serious.

When Richard first reached out to me, his message was filled with desperation. He said, “I need help. I can’t take this feeling of sadness and emptiness anymore.” In that moment, the most important thing I could do was listen.

Little by little, Richard shared his story with me. He currently identifies as transgender and is going through an ongoing struggle with his gender identity. This has led him to experience rejection and discrimination, even within his own family. All of this intensified his anxiety and deepened his sense of loneliness.

He also spoke about the pain he carries from his childhood. Richard grew up in an environment marked by domestic violence, and those memories are still very present in his mind. At times, through tears, he told me how much he wished he could erase those experiences, but he can’t. He suffers from nightmares, relives those moments, and lives with the constant fear that something terrible might happen to his mother. These experiences deeply affected his emotional well-being.

Realizing that Richard could not manage his depression and anxiety on his own, I decided to help him find professional psychological support so he could begin therapy. In addition, I regularly shared reflection videos and Christian music with him. Little by little, this helped reduce his anxiety episodes and brought moments of calm and hope into his life.

In several of our conversations, Richard has asked very deep questions about his life and his identity. He wonders whether he was born this way or if the painful circumstances he lived through influenced what he feels today. This shows that he is in a sincere search for answers, healing, and purpose.

Richard studied culinary arts at a technical institute, and for this reason, GYC Peru invited him to be part of the kitchen team during the social outreach event “Chosen for a Purpose” in Uñigán. He gladly accepted. During this event, we were able to see his heart for serving others with love, dedication, and commitment as he prepared meals for everyone attending.

Richard’s story reminds us that God is still at work in lives that many have written off. God is also reaching hearts within the LGBTQ+ community. Although Richard’s restoration process is still ongoing, we believe that God has already planted meaningful seeds in his heart, and we trust by faith that the One who began a good work in him will carry it to completion.

Thank you to AMOR Projects, GYC Peru, and to you, dear donor. Because of your generosity, lives are being accompanied, love is being shared, and hope is being restored.
